Custom ‘Deco Era’ Coffee Table

Art Deco Furniture: The ‘Deco Era’ Table

DSC_7978 (Copy)

The original ‘Deco Era’ style table I made was at the request of a customer, and based upon an old photo of a coffee table from the 30’s or 40’s. After designing the table from the photos, I crafted it from solid maple, distressed the piece & painted it in satin black enamel to give it the feel of an original vintage heirloom table.

I recently received a custom order for a table in the same style. Instead of the long & narrow coffee table, this was a 36″ by 36″ square design. I have to say that it allows more room to appreciate the accents & details of the design. This table was also crafted from solid maple & finished in satin black enamel to match the client’s living room suite.

I have been wanting to make this table in solid Black Walnut because I think it would look absolutely breathtaking, especially in the larger square size, or as square end tables along with a set. The detailed rails really lend themselves to the square design in this particular instance.

Here is the ETSY link for the newest incarnation of this table!

Hot off the (cherry) Press

This cherry ‘beauty’ sold the other day.

A unique creation from a interesting piece of cherry wood, this board was from the ‘outer cut’ or the last piece of a local cherry log. This cut results in a very angular live edge that makes for a very beautiful board in the hands of an expert.

A Tale of Two Tables

DSC_1784-1 (Copy)

These are two original ‘Demi Icon’ cherry accent tables. One has had time to naturally age into the classic cherry color, and the other is freshly finished. Cherry’s rich color is a major reason for it’s popularity among craftsman, cats & discriminating buyers alike.

The American Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) is a very noble tree that has provided for folks & fauna for a very long time. Wildlife use it for forage & shelter, and Native Americans as well as Colonists used the cherry tree for its fruit, medicinal properties and furnishings.

Apart from it’s myriad of uses, solid cherry hardwood is one of the most celebrated woods used in furniture craftsmanship today. It’s easy to work with, has a wonderful satiny ‘feel’ once finished, and even has a nice smell when cut. Yet the reason for its popularity is by far it’s beautiful, rich color. That quintessential, luscious deep red patina develops over time with exposure to light. Recognized both for both strength and beauty, cherry furniture graces homes with an enduring beauty for decades and generations.

For my customers who invest in heirloom quality furniture, it is useful for them to understand this color process. A perfect example are these two cherry tables. The darker table in the back has had time to age and color naturally, and the table in front is freshly finished for a customer.

I love to work with natural cherry, and find that it produces wonderful pieces of furniture. Customers enjoy watching the color transition, as it is unique to each piece, and could be compared to the aging of fine wine.
