Hot off the (cherry) Press

This cherry ‘beauty’ sold the other day.

A unique creation from a interesting piece of cherry wood, this board was from the ‘outer cut’ or the last piece of a local cherry log. This cut results in a very angular live edge that makes for a very beautiful board in the hands of an expert.

‘Zen Style’ Tray or Centerpiece

This is a really unique piece that is crafted from a natural edge cherry board. It has really nice color even though it will darken quite a bit from the photos, and into the rich reddish brown we all know and love. Cherry is unique that way…. after it’s milled, it has a really light almost pink quality that will over time ‘mature’ into what we all think of as the beautiful quintessential cherry coloring.

This footed tray or table centerpiece has a subtle live edge that is naturally beveled, that really adds interest to the feet that are already pretty interesting themselves….. Martin specially designed the feet for this very tray, and we think it gives a very nice Asian or Zen feel to it overall.

Approximate dimensions:

21″ Long
6-7″ Wide
2 3/8″ Tall

It would be great as a tea tray, table runner or table centerpiece, candle holder or display, dip or cracker or chip presentation tray, and so much more….

This one of a kind tray is available on our ETSY Shop!

This tray design has 4 round maple feet with pads for extra stability in the kitchen, and to protect your surfaces.

The dimensions are 22″ long, 13″ wide and 1.75″ tall.

We use a highly durable & deeply penetrating, hand rubbed oil finish that is non toxic, food safe, and is made from 100% local organic ingredients. Unlike the average ‘beeswax/oil finish’, our product is a true finish in that it penetrates, cures and hardens, creating a protective surface without leaving a oily film or requiring regular maintenance or reapplication. The finish that we use actually saturates the surface of the wood, and hardens to produce a durable, water & stain resistant surface.

Every piece that comes from my shop begins with the highest quality materials. I individually select each premium board for the specific project. My favorite species are high grade Walnut & fine Cherry, but I also love to work with rare local woods & exotic species such as Purple Heart, Mahogany & Ebony or Bubinga.

Implementing traditional techniques along with unique original designs, each piece is created to ‘heirloom quality’ standards. The use of traditional joinery in my work ensures strength & longevity for years to come. Rather than the more common use of metal fasteners & glue blocks, the joints that are created by the hand fitting process will never loosen or fail.

As the designer and maker, the design process is never complete until ready to ship. Designing & crafting furniture is a living process. From paper to packing crate, my organic techniques will create an item with character & a life of its own. To bring out the wood’s figure, grain & depth, I prefer to apply a hand rubbed finish. This is protective as well as aesthetic, as it draws one into the glowing of the heart of the wood. Every piece of furniture is meticulously hand packed & shipped in a custom package, to preserve your investment.

I build pieces that are intended to stand the test of time and will hopefully become family heirlooms someday. I always use materials and construction techniques consistent with strength and longevity. Careful selection and preparation of materials and hand fitted mortise and tenon joints are no longer a part of common modern furniture making, but in the long run, I believe that the extra time and effort are well justified.

Thanks,
~Martin Thaller
